Site in Focus - The Travel Magazine

Reason for website

The Travel Magazine is the longest running travel show in television history. With over 160 episodes in its back catalogue, it was felt that the time had come to make these available online. Since it is a destination driven program, the shows are still viable. The initial purpose of the website was to facilitate the purchase of video cassettes and DVDs of the television show.

Template or Custom?

Clearview Internet Solutions determined early on that a template would be the most cost effective and timely method to proceed with a website. Several templates were suggested. These initial templates were impressive yet they did not reflect the style and vision that The Travel Magazine possesses. The template eventually chosen was universally agreed to mirror the many different destinations that the show had visited while at the same time remain loyal to the original look of the show.

Steps involved

With the template chosen, we now had to decide what else the website required. Along with a catalogue of the available television shows, it was also necessary to include the regulation “About Us” and “Contact Us”. The clients provided us with a wealth of information, including a mini-biography that had already been written for them by someone else and also a tale which consisted of an anecdote about one of the many trips they had taken. This was so well received that we decided to include a “Travel Tales” page which could be updated in the future and also easily slotted into the menu for the homepage. A map of the destinations soon followed. Also a gallery of pictures taken by one of the clients was added to make the website more visually appealing.

The URL www.tvtravelmagazine.com was chosen since it incorporated the name of the TV show and also, to avoid the misconception that it might be a paper magazine, the “tv” was added at the start. Clearview Internet Solutions was chosen not only the design but also the hosting, which is one of the many solution packages offered..

Problems we solved

Necessity being the mother of invention, we decided that since some tabs were already included on the homepage then we should put them to good use. We added a facility to enable the viewer to check the weather in a major city and also to get some travel tips. Both of these links were very easy to do and just involved transferring to a different website.

Final Outcome

The initial reason for having the website was to enable the client to make sales of product online. However, with the template they selected, they were able to showcase so much more. It became a tribute site, a sales site and a travel information site. Visitors to the website not only have the opportunity to purchase an episode of The Travel Magazine but also learn about the hosts and producers and what they experienced, see some of the destinations they have visited and gain valuable information about traveling the world.
